Publication Ethics

Al-ʿAllāmah: Journal of Scriptures and Ulama Studies is a peer-reviewed academic journal managed by the Pendidikan Kader Ulama Masjid Istiqlal (PKUMI). The journal focuses on Ulama and Women Ulama Studies and broader Islamic Studies, covering disciplines such as Qur’anic Studies, Hadith Studies, Theology (ʿAqīdah), Philosophy, Islamic Law (Fiqh), Islamic Economics, Islamic History, Islamic Education, and Islamic Thought.

The journal publishes original scholarly articles that have not been previously published and are not under consideration by other journals. Al-ʿAllāmah is committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics and academic integrity. These ethical guidelines apply to all parties involved in the publication process, including the Publisher, Editors, Reviewers, and Authors, and are aligned with internationally accepted ethical standards of scholarly publishing.

Publication Decisions

The editors of Al-ʿAllāmah: Journal of Scriptures and Ulama Studies are responsible for deciding which submitted manuscripts are eligible for publication. Editorial decisions are based on the academic merit, originality, clarity, relevance, and contribution of the manuscript to the field of Islamic and Ulama Studies.

Editors are guided by the journal’s editorial policies and are bound by applicable legal requirements regarding defamation, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. In making publication decisions, editors may consult with other editors or reviewers.

Plagiarism Screening

Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts are free from plagiarism and all forms of academic misconduct. Nevertheless, every manuscript submitted to Al-ʿAllāmah is subjected to plagiarism screening prior to publication. Screening is conducted using both internal databases developed by PKUMI and reputable online plagiarism-detection tools. Manuscripts that exceed acceptable similarity thresholds will be rejected or returned for revision.

Fairness

Editors evaluate manuscripts solely on their intellectual content and scholarly quality, without discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, nationality, or political ideology of the authors.

Confidentiality

Editors and editorial staff must not disclose any information regarding submitted manuscripts to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, prospective reviewers, editorial advisors, and the publisher, as appropriate.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest (Editors)

Unpublished materials disclosed in submitted manuscripts must not be used by editors in their own research without the explicit written consent of the authors. Editors must recuse themselves from handling manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest.

Duties of Reviewers

Contribution to Editorial Decisions

Al-ʿAllāmah applies a double-blind peer-review process, in which both authors and reviewers remain anonymous. Peer review assists editors in making informed editorial decisions and helps authors improve the academic quality of their manuscripts.

Promptness

Any reviewer who feels unqualified to review a manuscript or anticipates that they will be unable to complete the review within the specified timeframe must promptly notify the editor and decline the review.

Confidentiality

Manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. Reviewers must not share, discuss, or use the content of the manuscript for any purpose other than the review process, unless authorized by the editor.

Standards of Objectivity

Reviews must be conducted objectively and professionally. Personal criticism of authors is inappropriate. Reviewers should provide constructive feedback supported by clear arguments and relevant scholarly references.

Acknowledgement of Sources

Reviewers should identify relevant scholarly works that have not been cited by the authors. Any indication that ideas, data, or arguments have been previously published should be accompanied by proper citations. Reviewers must also report to the editor any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under review and other published works of which they are aware.

Disclosure and Conflict of Interest (Reviewers)

Any privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and must not be used for personal advantage. Reviewers should decline to review manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest arising from personal, academic, institutional, or financial relationships with the authors or related institutions.

Review Process

Each manuscript submitted to Al-ʿAllāmah is independently reviewed by at least two reviewers through a double-blind review process. Editorial decisions—acceptance, revision, or rejection—are based on reviewers’ reports and recommendations. In certain cases, the editor may assign a third reviewer if additional assessment is required.

Duties of Authors

Reporting Standards

Authors of original research must present an accurate and honest account of the work performed and an objective discussion of its scholarly significance. Sufficient detail and references must be provided to allow replication or verification of the research. Fabrication, falsification, or deliberate misrepresentation of data constitutes unethical behavior.

Originality and Plagiarism

Authors must ensure that their manuscripts are entirely original. Any use of other scholars’ work, ideas, or words must be properly cited or quoted. All forms of plagiarism are unacceptable.

Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication

Authors should not submit the same manuscript or substantially similar content to more than one journal simultaneously. Publishing identical or overlapping research in multiple journals without proper justification is considered unethical.

Acknowledgement of Sources

Authors must properly acknowledge all sources that have contributed to their research. Citations should include works that significantly influenced the conception, methodology, or interpretation of the study.

Authorship of the Paper

Authorship should be limited to individuals who have made substantial contributions to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the research. All eligible contributors must be listed as authors, while others who contributed in a limited capacity should be acknowledged. The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all co-authors have approved the final manuscript and consented to its submission.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest (Authors)

Authors must disclose any financial or non-financial conflicts of interest that may influence the research or its interpretation. All sources of funding or institutional support must be clearly stated in the manuscript.

Fundamental Errors in Published Works

If authors discover significant errors or inaccuracies in their published work, they are obliged to promptly notify the editors of Al-ʿAllāmah: Journal of Scriptures and Ulama Studies and cooperate in correcting or retracting the article.
